Patrick kept an eye on Grey as they drove toward the crime scene. He wished he could feel what Grey was feeling, but with the bond still incomplete, it wasn’t possible. He knew that wasn’t the best reason to want to bond, but he doubted he’d be able to think straight until the killer was caught.

But he knew he wanted Grey in his life. He wanted to bond with him. He never wanted to lose him. Whatever the reasons behind that, he didn’t think they were wrong. Not the best ones, maybe, but not wrong. After all, he would want to bond with Grey if he wasn’t worried for him, and he wouldn’t be worried if he didn’t love him.

“Do you have any idea who the victim is?” Grey asked. He’d already asked that question, and Patrick didn’t have a different answer.

“No. Angelo said he’d meet us there with the rest of the team. I’m sure he’ll know more.” Now Patrick wished he’d gone with Miller to the crime scene before rushing home to Grey. He’d have been able to tell Grey more, and maybe Grey wouldn’t have been this tense. Of course, the fact that the victim was probably another man he knew was enough for him to be tense.

The body had been left close to pack territory again, although not at the official entrance. It was at one of the secondary ones, and they were lucky one of the patrol officers for the pack had been the one to find it rather than a civilian, or worse, a child, since the secondary entrances were sometimes used by teenagers to sneak into the forest.

Patrick followed the trail. He knew exactly the moment he found the crime scene. There were already half a dozen trucks and cars parked in a tiny clearing, almost on top of one another. People were walking around, hauling crime scene tools and whatever else they’d need. Someone had stretched crime scene tape between trees to fence off the scene, and Patrick and Grey had to stop to sign the register of the people entering the perimeter. Patrick wasn’t surprised to see Angelo was already there, talking with an angry-looking Miller.

“This guy’s human. It’s my case,” Miller snapped.

Angelo had his arms crossed over his chest and merely arched a brow. “He’s human, but his death is clearly related to the first one, and to Grey. Since my team is the one investigating the first murder, it’s logical we be the ones investigating this one, too. Or doesn’t it work like that for the human police force?”

Miller spluttered. Patrick understood why he wanted to be the one investigating, but he shared Angelo’s opinion, and Miller wouldn’t be able to refute that. Angelo had been put in charge of the investigation of the first crime and any other related crime that would happen. No one could change that, or at least, Miller couldn’t. He wasn’t their captain—and he knew it.

Angelo turned when he heard Patrick and Grey approaching.
